* History & Provenance: Established in 1924 by Henry and Rebecca Cooper along the historic Plank Road near Sanford, North Carolina, the North State Pottery Company rose to national prominence as a pioneer of the Southern Arts & Crafts movement. While the Coopers steered the design aesthetics and famously won a silver medal at the 1926 Philadelphia Sesqui-Centennial Exposition, the physical provenance of their wheel-thrown wares rests with a small circle of hired regional master artisans. Prominent potters like Walter Nelson Owen, Jonah Franklin Owen, and Charlie Boyd Craven meticulously threw these classical, geometric shapes by hand using local iron-rich clays. Rebecca Cooper then acted as the glaze master, experimenting with complex mineral-heavy formulations to produce the iconic, iridescent "oil spot" and gunmetal metallic lusters that defined the studio's peak 1930s production window before permanently closing in 1959.
~ Special Characteristics!
* Note: Condition Assessment: Museum Quality
For a nearly 90-year-old piece of hand-thrown Southern art pottery, in this immaculate state is incredibly rare! The fact that the gunmetal finish completely lacks these flaws indicates this piece was treated strictly as a treasured display item for its entire lifespan.
●The Crazing Factor: Because historic 1930s kilns lacked precision temperature controls, the contraction rates of the glaze and clay rarely matched perfectly, causing almost all surviving pieces to develop fine webs of crazing over time.
●The Utility Factor: Most North State pieces were used as functional kitchenware or porch planters, leading to inevitable rim flea-bites or interior utensil scrapes.
