Introduction:
A CV (Constant Velocity) axle is a crucial drivetrain component, primarily in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles, that transfers power from the transmission to the wheels. It uses specialized joints protected by rubber boots to deliver smooth, consistent rotational speed to the wheels while simultaneously allowing for steering movements and suspension articulation over bumps.
Symptoms of a Failing CV Axle:
A clunking sound when accelerating or decelerating.
Excessive shaking or vibrations while driving.
Dark, thick grease found on the inside of the rim or on the underside of the car, caused by a torn CV boot.
A loud clicking or popping sound when turning sharply, which indicates a worn-out outer CV joint.
Importance and Maintenance:
A failed CV axle can cause a loss of power to the wheels, leaving the vehicle stranded. Regular inspection of the rubber boots for tears or leaks is the best way to prevent total joint failure.
Installation steps:
Park on level ground, engage the parking brake, and support the vehicle with jack stands.
Remove the wheel and axle nut.Remove the brake caliper (hang it with bungee cord to avoid damage) and rotor.
Disconnect the tie rod end and lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
Carefully pull the axle out of the transmission/differential.
Apply a light coat of grease to the splines of the new axle that enter the transmission.
Align the splines and slide the inner joint into the transmission. Push firmly until it clicks or seats fully.
Guide the outer spline of the axle into the wheel hub assembly.
Reconnect the lower ball joint, tie rod, and steering knuckle.
Reinstall the washer and new axle nut (if provided), tightening it to the manufacturer’s specified torque setting.
Reinstall the brake rotor and caliper.
Lower the vehicle, ensure the axle nut is properly staked (locked) if required, and check transmission fluid levels if any was lost.
Key Tips:
Do Not Force:The axle should slide in relatively smoothly.
If the axle can be easily pulled out, it is not properly seated.
Avoid using grease on the splines mating to the wheel hub assembly, but grease the transmission-side splines.
Ensure no extreme pressure is on the suspension components while disconnecting.
