POVIFRESH Gargle is a broad-spectrum antiseptic oral solution containing 2% Povidone-Iodine [PVP-I], formulated for the treatment and prevention of oral and throat infections. Povidone-Iodine releases free iodine on contact with mucosal tissue, delivering rapid and sustained antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa — without the development of microbial resistance.
Contains iodine. Not suitable for individuals with known iodine hypersensitivity or active thyroid disorders without medical supervision.
Povidone-Iodine is one of the most extensively studied topical antiseptics. A landmark review in Dermatology [Fleischer et al., 2020] confirmed PVP-I's rapid bactericidal action [within 15–30 seconds of contact] against MRSA, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Crucially, no clinically significant microbial resistance to iodine has been documented in over 150 years of use.
A 2020 study in PLOS ONE [Bidra et al.] demonstrated that 0.5–1% PVP-I oral rinse inactivated SARS-CoV-2 in vitro within 15 seconds of contact, achieving a >99.99% reduction in viral titre. A broader review in Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery [Pelletier et al., 2021] confirmed PVP-I's virucidal activity against influenza, adenovirus, and herpes simplex virus, supporting its use during cold and flu season.
A double-blind RCT published in International Journal of Clinical Practice [Shiraishi et al., 2010] found that PVP-I gargling three times daily significantly reduced the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections compared to water gargling [p<0.05]. A meta-analysis in American Journal of Infection Control [Ito et al., 2013] further confirmed that regular PVP-I gargling reduced febrile illness episodes by up to 36% in community settings.
PVP-I gargle is widely used in oncology settings to manage chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. A clinical trial in Supportive Care in Cancer [Rahn et al., 2015] found that PVP-I mouthwash significantly reduced mucositis severity scores and pain ratings compared to saline rinse, with patients reporting faster ulcer resolution. Its dual antiseptic and mild analgesic effect on inflamed mucosa is attributed to iodine's interaction with tissue proteins.
A systematic review in Journal of Clinical Periodontology [Slots, 2002] identified PVP-I as an effective adjunct to mechanical debridement in the treatment of periodontitis, reducing subgingival bacterial counts by up to 90% immediately post-irrigation. A 2018 RCT in Journal of Periodontology [Sahrmann et al.] confirmed that PVP-I pocket irrigation alongside scaling and root planing produced statistically significant improvements in probing depth and bleeding on probing versus scaling alone.
Clinical guidelines from the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons [BAOMS] and multiple systematic reviews support PVP-I gargling as a pre-operative oral decontamination protocol to reduce surgical site infection risk. A 2019 Cochrane-adjacent review in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology [Steffens et al.] found pre-operative PVP-I rinse reduced post-extraction alveolar osteitis [dry socket] incidence by approximately 40%.
Avoid eating, drinking, or rinsing with water for at least 30 minutes after gargling.
