RARE vintage USSR Sturmanskie 1MchZ STOP-Second watch worn by Yuri Gagarin after servicing
When Yuri Gagarin made history as the first man in space on April 12, 1961, he was wearing a special watch. The watch was custom-made for this spaceflight by Sturmanskie. It has gained legendary status due to its flawless performance in zero-gravity conditions. Sturmanskie has been the official watch supplier to former Soviet and now Russian cosmonauts since 1961. Movement: Caliber 2608, 15 ruby jewels. Frequency: 18,000 vibrations per hour.
. The watches were issued only to pilots who graduated from the Soviet Air Force, known as the Voenno-Vozdushnye Sily (VVS). The watches were not sold to the general public or at so-called military stores, where servicemen could purchase uniforms and other military goods.
During this period of the Cold War, the VVS's core assets were long-range bombers and a few short-range fighters. For this reason, the logo of the Soviet bomber force on the watch represents the VVS of that time.
