The Artist: Fred Fredden-Goldberg (1889-1973). Born in Berlin, Germany in 1889. His father, who was an accomplished artist in his own right, was commissioned to paint Kaiser Wilhelm II. This is where Fred was first introduced to painting. When Fred was older, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine and Creative Arts in Berlin, where he later became Professor of Art and further at the Academy Julien in Paris.

In order to improve his techniques with animal life, Fred traveled to East Africa, remaining there for a year. During the chaos and destruction of World War II, all became meaningless as even the freedom of painting was denied him. In 1938 Fred escaped to Shanghai. Fred’s pen and ink portfolio of the Hitlerian Massacre and Chinese Associations was executed at the possible cost of his life, but he was compelled by an inner need to record a history, which should never be repeated. In 1947, Fred moved to San Francisco, California. Displaying his work with great success, he subsequently generated many awards for excellence in art. Fred passed away in 1973.

His remaining original oil paintings were destroyed in a fire in 1982. His work is now considered extremely rare. The versatility and magnetism of Fred Fredden- Goldberg’s paintings are apparent even to the untrained eye. His subtle use of color, composition and craftsmanship allows the onlooker to see the stark reality he presents. His symbolic approach and dramatic forceful interpretation of the subject are expressed with great feeling and dimension.
