This is an antique Japanese Jin-gasa (samurai war hat), crafted from wood with a traditional lacquer finish, dating to the late Edo period (19th century).

The hat features a lightweight wooden core, a construction commonly used by ashigaru (foot soldiers) and traveling samurai. The surface retains its original black lacquer, now aged with natural cracking (kannyu), which is a characteristic sign of authentic antique lacquerware.

At the center is a gilt family crest (kamon), likely a stylized floral or mokko-type design, representing the identity and affiliation of its original owner. Such crests were essential for battlefield recognition and also held symbolic meaning of lineage and status.

The simple yet powerful design reflects the aesthetics and practicality of Japanese military equipment. The aged surface and visible wear give this piece a strong historical presence.

Condition:

Noticeable lacquer cracking and surface wear due to age

Minor losses and oxidation consistent with long-term use

Gilt crest remains partially visible
