This is a Japanese kokeshi doll, a traditional handcrafted wooden doll that originated in Japan's Tohoku region.
Kokeshi dolls are characterized by a simple, limbless cylindrical body and a rounded head.
They are a traditional folk craft, originally made as toys or as symbols of good fortune and healthy growth for children.
The doll is a "creative" (Sosaku) style kokeshi, which breaks from the more rigid traditional styles.

The artist has painted a royal blue kimono on the doll, adorned with white and orange geometrical motifs and a gold obi.
Her bobbed-styled hair has been kept in the original wood with black lines painted to represent hair. A red ball adorns the side of her head.

She has large, expressive black eyes, a tiny nose, and the faintest suggestion of a smile.
The bottom is stamped "Made in Japan."

The doll is in excellent condition with bright colors and no marks or scratches. She would make an excellent addition to a collection.

The doll is from my mother LaVerne Hammond's collection of dolls.
I have other dolls posted from her collection and will combine shipping if you purchase more than one doll, sending you a rebate through eBay.
