Limited Editions have a fixed number of prints from the beginning of the print run. The number of limited editions is carefully chosen before production, and no more can be created after they are all sold.

If you are considering buying a Limited Edition Print then it is worth knowing the difference between a Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Lithograph,  a Printer's Proof Lithograph, and an Artist Proof Lithograph.

Let's look at a signed and numbered Limited Edition Print (LEP) first. A signed limited edition print is a copy of an original piece of art that is printed in a limited number. The prints are limited as the artist only releases a specific number of the prints. The artist will sign each copy of the print and number them. The number of copies will always be shown on the print itself. In the case of Ocean Paradise, the maximum number of LEP's was 750.

A Printer’s Proof (PP)Is a prototype that gives one an idea of how the design will look when professionally printed (also known as a repress). Printers proofs are more valuable than regular prints for a few reasons. First, they are usually more rare because the printer may have only made a small number of them. Second, they may be more detailed or have more color than a regular print. In the case of Ocean Paradise, the maximum number of PP was limited to 75.

An Artist’s Proof (AP) is also a signed and numbered Limited Edition piece. The work is an image taken during the printing process that shows the current printing state of the plate (or stone, or woodblock) that the artist is working on. Because of their rarity and a small amount of stock, Artist Proofs have historically been valued higher than other prints in this edition. An artist’s proof consists of an image of a print taken during the printmaking process to visualize the current printing state of a plate while it is being worked on by the artist. If an image’s initials are ‘AP,’ rather than a number at the bottom of the image, the image is labeled ‘artist’ proof. In the case of Ocean Paradise, the maximum number of AP was limited to 75.

Artist James Coleman can be found in collections around the world. His work is represented by some of the most prominent and respected galleries in North America, Asia, and the Hawaiian Islands. Coleman works in oil, watercolor, gouache and pastel. His work is impressionistic and luminous. Coleman is a naturalist and environmentalist who involve himself with the National Parks and other environmental organizations. His work has been displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and in traveling exhibits both in the U.S. and abroad.

James Coleman illuminates his canvases with phenomenal details – exquisitely captured scenes from life using vibrant colors that create works that touch the heart. As a master of light and design, Coleman has become one of the most collected and sought-after artists in the world.

Coleman began his career with Walt Disney Studios in the summer of 1969, when his mother, who had been working as a secretary with Disney since the Hyperion days, got him a job in the studio's mailroom. His big break came when he entered one of his paintings in the studio art show. Several of the Disney artists viewing his work, saw his potential and realized he had an untapped ability and encouraged him to go into animation background painting.

For almost 17 years, Coleman supervised the hand-painted backgrounds for more than 12 feature films and over 30 short films. The memorable titles Coleman worked on include “The Fox and the Hound” (1981), “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” (1983), “The Black Cauldron” (1985), “The Great Mouse Detective” (1986), “Oliver and Company” (1988), “The Little Mermaid” (1989), “The Rescuers Down Under” (1990), and the Academy Award-winning “Beauty and the Beast” (1991).

During his years at Disney he had also been showing his fine art in the top galleries in the southwest and Hawaiian markets. By 1991, after a 22-year career with Disney, he was ready to devote all of his time and talent to one of his greatest passions—fine art.

Ocean Paradise is a limited edition lithograph on heavy paper by James Coleman. The sheet size measures 37" x 20.5" with an image area of 34" x 17". The image is hand signed by the artist and numbered in the border.

Ocean Paradise is already in the collection of numerous celebrities including professional athletes and TV stars. We have included a picture of legendary former pro football player Joseph Robert Theismann posing in his home with his LEP.

Each LEP comes with a Certificate of Authenticity issued by James Coleman Studios.

Ocean Paradise is one of Coleman’s larger pieces and arguably his best representation of the Hawaiian tropical style that helped to make him famous as an artist of Hawaiian landscapes.

The original oil painting of Ocean Paradise is valued at over $60,000.00. The picture of the original oil painting is included above.

Over the years since his time at Disney, James Coleman’s name has become synonymous with sweeping skies, tropical rainforests, rich deep woods and silent deserts. He is also well known and extremely collaborations with environmental artist, Wyland. Coleman would paint above the water level and Wyland everything below giving two artists on the same image.
