Johann Berthelsen -The Little Church around the corner in the Snow -1930s Oil Painting
American Impressionist - Oil painting on canvas- signed
Canvas size: 16x13" - Frame size: 24x21"x3"

Painting description
This oil painting is a quintessential example of the work of Johann Berthelsen (1883–1972), a Danish-born American Impressionist celebrated for his atmospheric depictions of New York City in winter.
In this evocative work, the artist captures the quiet, wintery soul of Manhattan’s historic Church of the Transfiguration, affectionately known as "The Little Church Around the Corner." The painting is a masterclass in American Impressionism, where the artist’s signature "snow scene" technique transforms a bustling city corner into a sanctuary of stillness.
Architectural Composition:The composition is anchored by the slender, neo-Gothic spire of the church, which rises like a spectral silhouette through a dense, pearlescent haze. The low-slung, red-brick architecture of the "Little Church" is visible through the falling snow, its quaint lychgate and gabled roofs heavy with white impasto. A solitary, dark lamppost stands in the mid-ground, acting as a vertical sentinel against the soft, swirling atmosphere.
Atmosphere and Palette: Berthelsen employs a sophisticated tonal palette to convey the hushed weight of a New York blizzard:
  • Silvery Grays and Hazy Lavenders: These dominant tones create a sense of atmospheric depth, making the city buildings in the background appear to recede into a dreamlike mist.Warm Earth Tones: Subtle touches of ochre and burnt sienna in the church’s masonry provide a warm, grounded counterpoint to the cooling sky.Flecks of Vitality: Tiny, gestural strokes of crimson and deep navy represent the city’s inhabitants—pedestrians huddled against the cold—adding a poignant sense of human scale to the vast, snowy expanse. The Presentation: The artwork is encased in a Louis XV-style gilded frame, a grand architectural element in its own right. The deep-set acanthus leaf carvings and sweeping C-scroll corners create a dramatic "window" effect, while the warm, burnished gold finish provides a radiant border that heightens the cool, ethereal glow of the snow within. A classic linen liner offers a soft, textured transition between the ornate gold and the delicate oil on canvas. The Spirit of the Scene :Beyond its technical beauty, the painting captures the church’s storied identity as a "haven for actors" and a place of refuge. It is not merely a landscape, but an intimate portrait of a New York landmark finding peace amidst the elements.
Artist Biography
Johann Berthelsen (1883–1972) was a Danish-born American artist whose life was a unique harmony between two worlds: professional music and Impressionist painting
A Lyrical Beginning - Born in Copenhagen, Berthelsen immigrated to the United States at age seven [9]. Before ever picking up a professional brush, he was an accomplished operatic baritone. He graduated from the Chicago Music College in 1905 and spent years touring as a lead singer in opera and light opera companies.
The Shift to the Canvas - The Great Depression played a pivotal role in his artistic career. As the economic downturn made music lessons and performances a luxury few could afford, Berthelsen turned toward his hobby of painting as a means of survival.Self-Taught Master: He had no formal training in the visual arts, but his background in music gave him a natural sense of rhythm, tone, and "lyrical" composition
  • The "New York Winter" Niche: He moved to New York City and became fascinated by the way snow transformed the steel and stone of Manhattan. He soon became the preeminent painter of NYC winter streetscapes, particularly favoring landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Central Park, and St. Paul’s Chapel . Style and Legacy:Berthelsen is considered a key figure in American Impressionism. His work is defined by: Atmospheric Detail: He was a master of "atmospheric perspective," using soft, blurred edges and muted colors to make the viewer feel the damp chill of a New York storm .Patriotic Flair: He often included tiny, bright American flags in his snowy scenes, which became a trademark and made his work highly popular among collectors during and after World War II .Later Success: In his later years, he moved to Connecticut but continued to paint his beloved New York City from memory and sketches. He remained prolific until his death in 1972.Today, his paintings are held in prestigious collections, including the Sheldon Museum of Art and the Wake Forest University Art Collection.
