VIENNESE FEMALE SCULPTURE
ATTRIBUTED to HAGENAUER
NICKEL PLATED BRONZE

Description:
Striking Viennese modernist female sculpture in nickel-plated bronze,
attributed to Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien in Austria during the Art Deco
and early mid-century period.
The sculpture depicts a stylized
female figure with elongated proportions, a geometric facial treatment
and modernist silhouette. The long neck, simplified facial planes and
projecting nose are characteristic of the design vocabulary of Franz
Hagenauer.
A particularly feature of this sculpture is the subtle
twist at the waist, which gives the figure a graceful sense of
movement rather than a strictly vertical stance. When the sculpture
was acquired, the base was heavily worn and the original marks were
already very faint and difficult to read. During the professional
restoration and polishing process, these marks unfortunately became
completely indistinguishable. For this reason the sculpture is offered
as attributed to Hagenauer.
A very similar figure recently appeared
on the art market in England bearing Hagenauer full workshop marks.

Condition:
The sculpture
is in excellent present condition following a professional
restoration.
When acquired, the piece showed significant wear
to the original plating and damage to the base. It has since
been carefully restored and professionally re-nickel plated,
restoring the bright surface typical of Viennese metal
sculpture.
