Helmi Dagmar Juvonen (January 17, 1903-October 17, 1985) was an American artist active in Seattle
Washington. She worked in a wide variety of media, she is best know for her prints, paintings, and
drawings. She is associated with artists of the Northwest School. I saw her work in the early 70’s and
became very inspired. I decided to make a short documentary on film about her. In the process we met
and began an amazing correspondence. She lived in Elma, Washington and I lived in Seattle. She
created art post cards and mailed them to me. I never completed the film. The Spirits of Helmi Juvonen
was the title. This is 1975. I have 10 art card letters. Helmi was friends with Mark Tobey and mentions
him. Also, Wesley Wehr another Northwest artisit. The letters are full of Helmi’s life at the time. Thank
