It is our pleasure to offer this Yaesu FRG-7700 on Ebay. Cosmetically, this receiver is one of the nicer ones to pass through our hands in recent years. Signs of previous ownership are minimal. Please look closely at our pictures so that you are familiar with specific cosmetic appearance.
In operation of the Yaesu, the unit was tested and we noticed that the meter and analog tuning lamps were burned out. Additionally, the volume pot contacts were so dirty that the volume would cut in and out if moving the volume control. We had the receiver serviced to replace the burned out lamps and all the switches and pots were cleaned to assure proper connection and without the noise.
Upon return to us from servicing, we retested and verified that everything was in proper working order. The tuning was smooth and the unit was sensitive to weak signals. Of special note was using the oversize knurly main tuning knob that was nice for man-sized hands to grip.
This
particular receiver comes with optional and somewhat scarce memory unit installed. This MU-7700 memory unit typically sells separately for $150 when
available for sale and you can see it mounted on the rear panel of the
receiver. This memory unit stores 12 frequencies in memory and these may
be accessed with a switch on the front panel. Three AA batteries inserted
in a holder on the bottom of the receiver allow the memories to be retained
during power outages or when the receiver is disconnected from the AC.
The 7700 comes with:
Of special treat is the inclusion of the
FRG-7700 Survival Guide by William Pender who has labored to give information
on what transmissions can be found on various bands, information on
accessories, schematics of the radio and accessories, alignment info, and tips
on solving some issues that may arise.
The FRG-7700 is a triple superhet manufactured
from 1981-1984 and sold as a follow up to Yaesu's highly rated FRG*7
receiver. It was actually intended to be an updated version of the
beloved "Froggy" with a digital display and some other features, but
never quite filled the shoes of that venerated unit. However, that
said, it is an excellent receiver and one that is both worthy and a joy to
operate.
Let us list some of the features for you
As you can see, this is a serious receiver for
an intermediate listener. It is easy and fun to operate and if you are
concerned about a receiver being too technical, then this one is easier to
master than some other receivers. The sensitivity is quite nice, but the receiver will require a good
antenna. You may attach a 10 or 15 foot wire to the back with some decent
results, but erecting an outdoor antenna will greatly improve both the number
and quality of the signals.
We work from home and listen to English
programs on shortwave many hours each day. Thus, as hobbyists, we
enjoy the virtues of the receivers that we sell and the quality of programs
that the shortwave broadcasters offer to their listeners. Each week we tune into
roughly different 8-10 countries for news from all parts of the world and for
many of the other enjoyable programs offered on shortwave. Sometimes
the reception is seasonal and we lose a country or two and gain others to
replace them. Over the course of a year we must listen in on about
15 countries....all in English.
Shortwave is especially fun when there are
world events of high significance. During the large earthquake that
hit New Zealand a few years ago, we were able to get news and
features that would rival what NPR offers here in the USA. The joy
of discovery and of being able to tune into various countries and hear their
news and culture is a thrill to us as we live in a rural area amidst the
cornfields and yet at our fingertips we can hear the world.
At this point, we believe we have conveyed all
the information that may be helpful for you to consider whether this receiver
is suitable for your needs.
