For sale is a Stunning Antique Central Plains (Arapaho / Sioux ?) Beaded Pipe Bag, circa 1880s.
The bag is made of native tanned hide, sinew sewn with a roll beaded neck and hide tabs addorned with horse hair. Remains of yellow pigments visible. Beaded panels are decorated in stunning designs with glass beads in a multitude of colors, all sinew sewn.
This truly one of a kind bag compares well with the vibrant designs and colors of a beaded cradle labelled 'Sioux' from the Charles Schreyvogel collection in the Linden-Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
Good condition. Hide of throat is on the stiff side but flexible and has repairs. Minimal loss of beads. See the pictures for that.
The bag is circa 32" long and 7" wide.
Provenance: this stunning bag was in the collection of the Choate School in London, UK, and offered for sale in 1991 by Sotheby's New York, NY, in their Fine American Indian Art auction on May 21.
