Rare Armand Marseille Character Doll

12 1/2" FANY Toddler

#230 A3M

On His Original Unique Body

Original Antique Doll - Made in Germany c.1912

[   FEATURES AND DETAILS...   ]

This is the rare 12 1/2" Fany (actually about 12.25", to be exact), mold #230 -- the non-wigged version -- by Armand Marseille.

He is marked: "Fany 230 A.3.M." and "D.R.M.R. 248/1" (What you see on the left side of the neck, diagonally, is the "DRMR" and "248/1."  That is not an artist signature; it is the correct Marseille marking for this original 1912 Fany doll.)

According to the experts at Theriault's: "Marseille, circa 1912; the model was inspired by the 16th century Francois Duquesnoy sculpture of a young child.... Enchanting doll, whose rarity and historical significance are rivaled by finest sculpting and bisque..."
Of course, one twist Theriault's neglected to mention is that Armand Marseille actually copied (or, shall we say, outright plagiarized?) Käthe Kruse -- who first marketed her signature little boy doll in the early 1910s -- modeled after Duquesnoy.  But imitation is the finest (if not the most sincere) form of flattery, right?

Whatever his conception, though ... he is a sweet character doll with closed mouth, full cheeks, and downcast pouty lips.  He has a solid-dome bisque head with darling little blue glass sleep eyes, painted lashes, single-stroke eyebrows, and lightly-painted, sculpted boyish blond hair.  He is wonderfully modeled, with the highly-characterized features you expect in Marseille's high-end character dolls.

Best of all -- which you do not always see, even when this rare doll does come up for sale -- is that he's on his original Fany body with slant hips, curled fingers, and those distinctive, unusual cloth shoulders.

PLEASE READ: NOTE ABOUT THIS DOLL'S ORIGINAL BODY
Some visitors to our store questioned why this rare doll has an unusual body -- with cloth upper arms as described above -- when they have found other examples of the Fany 230 doll with more "normal" bodies. The answer is that Armand Marseille ONLY used this unusual body on the 12.5" model, NOT on the other sizes of Fany dolls they produced. If you do see a 12.5" Fany 230 with a "normal" body, be aware that the body has been replaced, which renders that doll much less valuable, of course. The true original body for this size Fany 230 will have these special cloth upper arms. If you have questions, please send us a message. We are always GLAD to discuss our dolls, our listings, and any questions you may have! Thank you.

He is dressed in the cutest outfit with overalls, Tom Sawyer straw hat, and his homemade bamboo fishing pole complete with fish.

This is a fine specimen of the rare 12.5" Fany, and he displays fabulously.  Fany has such a wistful face, -- a wonderful character doll that is highly sought after.

NOTE: The BOAT is a photo prop -- not included -- though he does come with his outfit, hat, and fishing pole!

[   CONDITION DETAILS...   ]

- Beautiful antique condition -- from a non-smoking environment.

- Original cloth-and-composition Fany body with its original finish.  The cloth upper arms are in great condition -- which is an extra bonus.  When you do find these bodies (which is quite rarely), the cloth is often deteriorated.

- No issues or repairs/repaint found with the bisque after careful examination.

- Likewise, the body is free of repaint.  There are only two things worth mentioning: a craze line that runs up the back of his left leg, and a small repair/replacement of the composition "plug" where the cloth arms enter the doll's shoulder.  (And, notice that one of these "plugs" has worked itself loose; however, the arm is pretty secure in there and not inclined to fall out unless you pull it out.)

IMPORTANT: Besides the noteworthy issues mentioned above, EXPECT any antique doll (bisque/composition/leather/china/wood) to ALSO have:

(1) SIGNS OF AGE - for example: toned/crazed/chipped composition, minor wig pulls, loss of "hair" lashes on bisque heads, not-so-tight stringing, etc., and ...

(2) MINOR CONSERVATION WORK by previous owners/collectors - for example: reset eyes (in most cases!), repairs to wig, repairs to clothing, touch-ups on composition/finish/paint, etc.

SO ... Any MAJOR issues -- hairline crack, total repaint, etc. -- would be itemized above, but these normal age/conservation details are not.  They are to be expected.  Thank you.

PLEASE SUPERSIZE ALL PHOTOS, AND ASK ALL QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING/BUYING.  I'LL BE GLAD TO ANSWER.

[   RETURN POLICY ON DOLL LOTS...   ]

It is with deep regret that -- after 14 years selling on eBay, and with 100% positive feedback -- I've had to change my return policy on dolls to "NO RETURNS, AND NO PARTIAL REFUNDS."

As often happens, it's the few bad apples out there who ruin it for the rest of us. These dishonest people will buy a doll, then try to improve or restore it ... not knowing what they're doing. And then, when they realize they've ruined the doll, they return it saying it was defective.  Or else they keep the doll and demand a "partial refund" based on the alleged defect -- which is another trending scam on eBay.

I sell these dolls for a living so, my sincere apologies to you -- the honest majority of eBay buyers -- that I can no longer afford to accept doll returns.  (Of course, shipping loss or damage is a different matter; that is fully covered by insurance.)

BUT HAVING SAID ALL THAT ...

I do bend over backwards, attempting to disclose any noteworthy condition issues I can find or think of. But these are antique and vintage dolls -- so, please understand that they won't be in brand-new condition. There will always be some minor indication of their age, and it would be impossible to itemize every single pinhead-size stain on the outfit, or hairline scratch on the body.  Please expect these types of conditions with old dolls.
