The Vulcan Gold and Silver Mining Company owned
mines near Ouray, Colorado (Ouray County) within the Ouray Mining District
(also called the Mt. Sneffles District), San Juan Mountains (see attached
photo of Ouray ca. 1890 with the Beaumont Hotel behind a stage coach). The
company owned the Vulcan Lode, within an area of about 300 x 1,500 feet,
situated on the south slope of Potosi Mountain, about 6 miles southwest of
Ouray. The lode was patented ion 1879 by Vulcan Gold and Silver, and was a
quartzite vein of gold and silver-bearing ore from eight to twelve feet wide.
The Vulcan Lode was developed by one tunnel about 100 feet long, with one
15-foot crosscut.
