White Heat (1934) was directed by the pioneering female filmaker Lois Weber (she also wrote the screenplay). A Significant talking picture that explored racial tensions and romance on a Hawaiian sugar plantation, featuring a plantation owner torn between a native woman (Mona Maris) and a high society wife (Virgina Cherrill) and serves as a notable, though controversial, final feature for Weber before her career waned.
It was the first Hollywood film shot on location in Hawaii (Kauaʻi).
