This piece of beautiful antique jewelry is a mystery to me.
Antique Buddha amulets are greatly sought after, because people believe they hold great power to bring good fortune, wealth, and protection. This one depicts a sitting Buddha. The amulet is about an inch and a half tall- 40 MM. I am unsure of the metal it is made of, but I think it has lead in it- quite heavy for the size.
It looks as though it was broken from something bigger, because the bottom is rough with what looks like a rod that is broken- where it might have been attached to the larger scene. There are cracks in it- as you can see in the pictures. It seems to be holding together very well within the metal frame that comprises the setting.
I have tried to do some research on this amulet, but the information available is sparse. It may be as "young" as 600 years old, or as old as 2400 years old. I have seen names like: Khmer amulet Phra Rod, Phra Somdej, Phra Tha Kradan, or associated with temples like Wat Ton Lam Yai or Wat Tha Kradan, and these amulets are said to provide invincibility, protection from danger, and attraction. They are highly sought after by collectors and believers for their alleged powers, such as warding off danger, black magic, and ghosts, as well as for improving luck and business. Most probably from Kanchanburi province.
If you know anything (since I do not) about this amulet, you are welcome to let me know, so I can learn.
I received this amulet as a gift.
