This is an original antique stock certificate from the Rutland Railroad Company, issued in the pivotal year of 1927. The Rutland was known as the "Green Mountain Gateway," operating approximately 400 miles through Vermont and into New York, carrying vital freight like milk, marble, and lumber.
This certificate is a tangible piece of New England and New York railroad history from the close of the "Golden Age" of railroading.
The year 1927 is one of the most historically significant dates for any Rutland Railroad collectible:
The Year of Disaster: In November 1927, the Great Vermont Flood occurred, crippling more than half of the Rutland’s total mileage. This sudden, massive expense for repairs fatally destabilized the company, placing it on the financial path that led to its 1938 receivership and its eventual abandonment in 1961. This certificate was issued just months before the disaster that sealed the railroad's ultimate fate.
Corporate Control: In 1927, the Rutland was under the crucial joint control of the two most powerful East Coast rail giants: the New York Central (NYC) and the New York, New Haven and Hartford (NH). This certificate represents a stake in a line essential to the strategic network of these larger carriers.
Condition: I am not a professional and this comes from my father’s collection of antique stocks and bonds. Given its age, it shows toning, foxing, edge wear and folds but no tears. It was issued and as well as cancelled so it shows those marks and holes. The stock has a beautiful vignette, ornate borders, period font/ typography and printed by American Bank Note NY.
