This listing is for the original framed watercolor that you see in the photos. I purchased it at an estate sale in Oregon where I was not told it's history. It is signed in pencil on the painting, “Mary Coles”. My research tells me that there is a good chance that it was painted by Mary Drake Coles (1903-1998). I have not been able to gather enough information to be sure of that attribution. I leave it to the buyer to decide who painted it and when  and where.

Mary Drake Coles (1903-1998) was a watercolor artist known for her paintings of Martha's Vineyard, particularly Edgartown. She lost her vision in the mid-1950s due to glaucoma, but continued to paint, relying on memory and the consistent arrangement of her supplies. She was a graduate of Smith College and also studied art at Provincetown, Paris, and New York City. 

The frame measures close to 27 ¼ by 27 ¼ by 1 inches. The area of the watercolor exposed by the mat measures close to 17 by 16 ¾ inches. It looks like there's some kind of board behind the painting which makes the overall weight of the frame painting feel relatively heavy. The framed painting weighs close to 9 pounds 12.4 ounces. The painting is behind glass so there are a few reflections in my photos.

 The frame looks to me like it could be from the 1930s or 40s. Curiously, there is a thick line of some kind of unidentified substance across the bottom right hand corner of the mat. That irregularity makes me think that it might have been reframed using the original Matt. otherwise I have no idea why that line is there. 

The condition is much like you see it in the photos. I have not examined the painting out of its frame so in that respect to this be sold “as is”. From what I can see, the painting is in excellent condition with no damage. The frame feels nice and sturdy. There are a couple of light colored discolorations on the frame. The paper backing on the frame is discolored and a little damaged. There is an irregularity across the bottom right hand corner of the mat that you can see in the photos. Otherwise, painting and frame are as shown. 

I guarantee this original watercolor and frame to be as described and represented by the photos. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them. I allow two business days for shipping, but I usually ship the same or next day if possible. Please note that the lighting in my photos is uneven and there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors. Different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs "approximately" or “close to” because no measurements are exact, and some things are difficult to measure.

I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explanation. I sometimes purchase signature delivery for my more valuable packages. I often, but not always, ship the same or next day. Often, I have a box custom made for items that I do not have a used box for  which might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually made from biodegradable materials.
