This original 1858 railroad bond was issued by the Syracuse, Binghamton & New York Rail Road Company, a mid-19th-century line formed to connect the Finger Lakes region of New York with the rapidly expanding Southern Tier and eastern rail networks. Railroads like this played an important role in opening central New York to industrial commerce, agricultural trade, and passenger travel. Bonds from this era represent an important early phase of American rail-finance history, predating the major post–Civil War consolidations.

Condition: I am not a professional and this comes from my father’s collection of antique stocks and bonds. Given its age, it is definitely fragile and has wear and tear. Please see photos as I try to highlight the areas. The bond does have toning, foxing, edge wear and folding. Along the fold there is a tear as the paper is very thin. It does show the raised corporate seal which has a train as part of it. It does have a beautiful train vignette as well.

Again… please see photos and ask questions. I will also combine shipping so please see my other listings or follow along as I continue to add daily.

Bonds from 1850s New York railroads are prized for their:

• Historical value in early American transportation

• Ornate engravings and typography typical of pre-Civil War securities

• Named signatures of corporate officers

• Scarcity, since most were redeemed or destroyed

This piece is a desirable artifact for railroadiana collectors, financial-history enthusiasts, or anyone interested in early New York State industrial development.
