Vintage Madison Wooden Badminton Racquet – Made in Japan (1950s–60s)

A charming mid-century wooden badminton racquet, manufactured in Japan during the booming post-war export era. These racquets were sold widely through American department stores, summer camps, and general sporting-goods catalogs as affordable, attractive starter equipment.

This example features the classic blue-and-cream painted frame, the Madison diamond decal, and the original tight nylon stringing typical of badminton racquets of the period. Lightweight, slender, and beautifully aged, it has exactly the right look for retro wall décor, cabin or lodge staging, a sports-themed room, or vintage display pieces.

Shows natural wear, scuffs, and paint loss throughout — the kind of authentic patina decorators love. Structurally solid for display, but not intended for modern play. Excellent as vintage décor. Please note the faint, slow, bend in the neck (see pics).

Why This Matters

In the 1950s and 60s, badminton was hugely popular in American backyards, camps, church picnics, and beach cottages. Lightweight wooden racquets like this one introduced entire generations to the game long before aluminum and fiberglass took over. This is a true artifact of that era — simple, cheerful, and unmistakably mid-century.
