This is a stereo Gainlab Audio Dictator model GLA-TC1. It is a Pentode Vari-U valve compressor with less than 20 hrs use on the original valves. It was purchased new from KMR and racked as per the instructions with a 1U gap top and bottom to aid cooling.
The compressor, like the EQ also for sale, is an excellent piece of outboard for adding analog mojo to your individual tracks or to the master bus and is useful for both mixing and mastering. In common with many valve-driven outboard units all setting combinations sound good, just different and the notched controls simplify the number of possible settings and aid recall. There are two compression levels, low and high with a bypass to compare the output to the uncompressed sound. There is a very useful sidechain that allows free passage of selected low frequencies so the compression can be directed at higher frequencies specifically. The attack and release settings are again an artistic judgement allowing capture or passage of transients.
The Dictator was purchased with a Gainlab Empress and the two units work exceptionally well together providing wonderful analog warmth and saturation from subtle to not-so-subtle! The Dictator has the greatest flexibility in this respect with input and output levels providing rich valve saturation if required. When I purchased these I had a friend lined up to perform the necessary recalibration for the future time when the valves need replacing but unfortunately ill health has stopped him working. A lack of a decent local tech has made me reluctant to put hours on the units so they have consequently had very little use.
The unit is boxed in its original Gainlab box with an additional shipping box outside. Whilst I would prefer collection I am open to the purchaser arranging insured courier collection at their risk. I will supply box dimensions and weight after purchase.
