Description
A really good and very interesting example of an early eighteenth century hook and spike wall clock, unsigned, but obviously an Oxfordshire Quaker clock, and details of its construction make me certain that it was made by John Nethercott of Long Compton, one of the earliest makers of these clocks, who died in 1735. ( see notes below)
Sizes: Dial 9 inches square ( 23 cm) Chapter ring 8 1/4 inches diameter. Depth including spikes 6 1/2 inches. Movement 4 1/2 inches deep x 5 5/8 inches wide x 6 inches high. Bell 5 3/8 inches diameter.
Condition: Everything appears original and unaltered.
The clock is running and striking correctly, but has not been serviced or cleaned recently, so I suggest at least stripping, cleaning and oiling it before running it for any length of time. There are minor faults that could be repaired: The original hand is damaged at its end, two of the three loops being cracked through and displaced. An urgent repair of this is needed to avoid losing the tip of the hand. See pictures below.
The corner of one side door is bent out of shape: this needs annealing before hammering flat again.
It comes complete with what is probably its original pendulum and a period lead weight.
Shipping: to most UK addresses is £25.
I will ship worldwide, please ask for a price if interested.
I am willing to deliver and set it up within 50 miles of Norwich, if required.
NOTES
The key reference book on these clocks is " The Quaker Clockmakers of North Oxfordshire" by Tim Marshall. His book has a wealth of very detailed informaton, not just about the makers, but also details of the construction of their clocks.
On page 41 he illustrates an early clock by John Nethercott which has the following features in common with this clock.
1) Thick brass dial with bands of concentric wrigglework.
2) Dial held to the movement with two pillars through the front movement bar.
3) Top plate of the movement made of thick brass, with a cut out for the fly.
4) Bottom plate of the movement made of sheet iron.
5) all brass winding pulley discs.
I note also that the iron hoop is riveted to the brass top plate, The corner pillars are brass, and so the spikes are riveted to the iron bottom plate ( most other makers use iron pillars and the spikes are forged as one piece with the back pillars)
The spandrels are the small "busty lady" type, commonly used on these clocks, and the casting of them is quite sharp with plenty of detail, suggesting an early use of these spandrels, later ones being often quite crude.
Payment
Payment must be made within 7 days of winning bid unless other arrangements have been made. If there is a problem with payment, please contact me. I am quite reasonable and willing to help sort out any problems, but If I receive no contact after 7 days have passed, a non-payment case will be opened and I will offer the item to the next highest bidder.
Payments from overseas must be made with paypal unless other arrangements are agreed with me prior to bidding. U.K payments can be made via paypal, personal cheque or postal order. Cash on collection is also possible by arrangement.
Shipping
I AIM TO SHIP OUT ALL ITEMS WITHIN THREE WORKING DAYS - I GO TO THE POST OFFICE THREE TIMES A WEEK. IF YOU NEED AN ITEM MORE URGENTLY LET ME KNOW WHEN PURCHASING.
Combined Shipping for items: If you buy more than one item from me, please wait to be invoiced before paying so that I can apply an appropriate postage discount. I will combine multiple purchases to help reduce postage costs where possible, as it is usually possible to post several small items in one parcel for less than the cost of sending them in separate parcels. Note: Overseas shipments have to weigh less than 2kg packed weight to be sent by Airmail, otherwise they have to go by courier, which is usually much more expensive. For overseas shipments, It is best to ask first if I can combine your items before you bid.
Postage Costs:
I keep my postage costs to a reasonable level - but they do have to reflect the costs of lightweight packaging materials and the time spent packing the item properly so that it will arrive with you in one piece. I recycle what I can but still spend a lot on bubblewrap, tape, boxes etc. It is not my aim to make a profit out of shipping costs, but I do spend many hours packing items and my time is valuable too. NOTE THAT EBAY ALSO TAKE A PERCENTAGE OF YOUR SHIPPING CHARGES - THIS ADDS ABOUT 10% TO THE BILL.
Recorded delivery: I always obtain proof of posting, but it is possible for the item to get lost or stolen in transit. I do offer a recorded delivery service, and would strongly advise that you use it. If you want Recorded Delivery, or special next day delivery, or a tracked courier service, please let me know prior to payment and I'll add the charge for this to your billing.

IF FOR ANY REASON YOU FEEL YOU CANNOT GIVE POSITIVE FEEDBACK AND A 5 STAR RATING, PLEASE CONTACT ME BEFORE LEAVING FEEDBACK SO THAT I CAN ADDRESS ANY ISSUES THERE MAY BE. I WILL LEAVE POSITIVE FEEDBACK FOR YOU WHEN I AM ASSURED THAT THE ITEM HAS ARRIVED SAFELY AND THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS.
