Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called "Regensburg" type, by the name of the region where it was first produced, even though the majority of them were produced in the Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels - they did not use cobalt-based glaze, so the steins keep their natural clay color.

In Germany, they call them "Model" steins, referring to the method of manufacturing. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterwards to make the insides round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface.

The stein shows the story of Wilhelm Tell - a legendary Swiss folk hero who is said to have lived in the Canton of Uri in Switzerland in the early 14th century. According to the legend, he was an excellent crossbow marksman. He was arrested for not bowing to the Austrian lord who was ruling Switzerland at the time and was condemned to death. By the rule of the lord, he could be spared from the death sentence if he shot an apple placed on his son's head. He shot the apple from a single attempt and became a Swiss national hero and the symbol of Swiss resistance to Austrian rule

The inscription at the bottom reads "Wilhelm Tell" in Old German script. It is quite a rare subject for a Regensburg stein.

The lid is perwter with the closed-type five ring hinge and a feather-shaped thumblift. It is inscribed with the presentation inscription:

"Zur Erinnerung der 11 July 1850" - (For the memory of July 11, 1850)

The stein is in excellent condition. There are some minor manufacturing glitches due to the manual process, but no chips or cracks.

Nice and impressive antique beer vessel with about 175 years of history behind it.

It is 6" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.
