William Gay (born January 1, 1985), widely known by his nickname “Big Play Willie Gay,” enjoyed an eleven-year NFL career defined by durability, consistency, and clutch performances. Gay played his college football at the University of Louisville, where he was a versatile cornerback for four seasons and helped lead the Cardinals to an Orange Bowl victory in 2007. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft, he entered the NFL as a depth corner before working his way into a larger role on one of the league’s best defenses. He contributed early as part of a secondary that helped the Steelers capture Super Bowl XLIII, where they defeated the Arizona Cardinals in a dramatic finish. Gay also started in Super Bowl XLV, giving him two appearances on the game’s biggest stage.

Over the course of his career, Gay became known for making momentum-changing plays in critical situations. His most famous stretch came in 2014 when he set an NFL record by returning an interception for a touchdown in five consecutive games, underscoring why teammates and fans called him “Big Play Willie.” Beyond his playmaking ability, he was one of the most dependable players in the league, appearing in 176 consecutive games without missing one due to injury, a rare feat for a defensive back. He finished his career with 571 tackles, 13 interceptions, and 5 defensive touchdowns. Gay was also recognized as a team captain, valued not only for his production but also for his leadership in the locker room. Off the field, he became an outspoken advocate against domestic violence after losing his mother to domestic violence as a child. Throughout his career, he used his platform to raise awareness and educate others, cementing his legacy as both a champion on the field and a role model off it.
