1915 Rare 'Borgel trench watch. Black enamel dial stamped 'Longines' with lumed hour and minute hands and a subsidiary seconds dial. Case is stamped with François Borgels' official  trademark bearing the 'key of geneve'. A sponsors mark for Arthur George Rendell. We initially thought the movement was a fontainemelon, but thanks to a very helpful gentleman, we have been informed that it's a high-quality 'electra' 17 jewel adjusted movement by Gallet & Cie. The company has a long tradition of watchmaking dating back to the 15th century. By 1914 and the breakout of war, Gallet & Cie were in a perfect position to supply watches to troops on the frontline and continued to do so throughout the war.

Interestingly, this is similar to the Borgel watch worn by George Mallory on his 1924 ascent of everest. The watch was found when his body was discovered in 1999. This case bears london import marks along with a 'U' date mark, The same date mark as mallorys Borgel watch. The watch functions correctly but could benefit from a service. 40mm case diameter including onion crown.
