This Japanese chisel was forged by Yoshiro Usui, the 4th generation Sukemaru, a skilled blacksmith known for his excellent high speed steel chisels. Yoshiro Usui recently retired and is no longer making tools. Mr Usui didn’t make many timber framing chisels in this style, so they are somewhat rare.

HSS provides a sharp edge that is very difficult to dull or chip, making it a great choice for North American and European hardwoods as well as more exotic and dense hardwoods from South America, Australia, etc. It holds a sharp edge much longer than white or blue paper steel. It’s also great for abrasive or dirty woods, as well as other materials like MDF, various plastics, etc.

Condition: New old stock. The chisel has never been sharpened or used and is in excellent condition, there are some light marks from storage. As this is an unused item, you will need to set up and sharpen the chisel.

The style is Tataki Atsu, known as a firmer or framing chisel in the west. Sharpened at 30°, this style of chisel is designed for quickly chopping or hogging out material. Thick and durable, this is the workhorse for traditional timber frame carpenters. It can also be used for detailed cabinetry work. With a metal hoop to prevent splitting of the wood handle, it is meant to be hit with a genno or metal hammer. Being larger than the standard bench chisel (Ooire Nomi) it works quite well for paring as well as chopping - a jack of all trades.
