Florence Camm (1874-1960) was a British stained-glass artist, painter and metalworker associated with the Arts and Crafts movement.  The quality of her draughtmanship made her work stand out in her field and she won numerous prizes for her drawings, stained glass designs and metalwork. She exhibited her work in national and international exhibitions.

In 1923 Florence fulfilled a commission to provide a number of drawings for inclusion in a leaflet for the National Childrens' Home. The leaflet was issued to establish the Order of St. Christopher. Members of the Order were asked  to provide "personal and helpful service according to individual opportunity"  It would appear that Florence also designed a small bronze statuette of St. Christopher which was issued by the Home to new members of the Order.  It is more than likely that Florence's work on these drawings and designs were given gratis.  Her love for the subject matter of them is evident in the quality of the drawings.

This particular drawing, showing a teenage girl carrying a younger one, looks like it is a portrait of actual children. Florence tended in her stained glass design work to use her workshop staff as models, and she seems to have adopted a similar approach here.  The subject also reflects the story of St. Christopher who carried a small child over a stream. In the leaflet, nearly all of the illustrations show a child being carried by an older child or adult.  However, this drawing was not used eventually for the leaflet.

The drawing is signed and dated by the artist and inscribed by her "13 1/2 hrs for complete pen & ink drawing".  The drawing has been squared for transfer to the engraver's plate.

A photocopy of the issued leaflet will be provided with the purchase of this picture, and also one of a handwritten note by Camm describing the picture as "Girl carrying child".

We have most of the other drawings done by Camm on this project - please enquire if interested.
