Nacreous Clouds

A mother of pearl cloud is a polar stratospheric cloud (PSC). Also known as a nacreous cloud ("nacre" is another name for mother-of-pearl), it forms in the winter polar stratosphere at altitudes from 15,000 to 25,000 m (49,000 to 82,000 ft). As such, it is extremely rare, far more difficult to experience than the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis (the northern and southern lights).

Mother of pearl clouds are best observed during twilight, when the Sun is between 1° and 6° below the horizon, as well as in winter and in more northerly latitudes. One of the two main types of PSC consists only of ice crystals. This type of PSC is also called nacreous, from nacre, or mother of pearl, due to its iridescence.

The stratosphere, where these rare and unusual clouds form, is very dry. Unlike the troposphere, it rarely allows clouds to form due to this dryness. In the extreme cold of the polar winter, however, stratospheric clouds of different types may form, which are classified according to their physical state (super-cooled liquid or ice) and chemical composition. Due to their high altitude and the curvature of the surface of the Earth, these clouds will receive sunlight from below the horizon and reflect it to the ground, shining brightly well before dawn or after dusk.

Type II clouds, which are very rarely observed in the Arctic, have cirriform and lenticular sub-types, and consist of water ice only. Only Type II clouds are necessarily nacreous, whereas Type I clouds can be iridescent under certain conditions, just as any other cloud.

Niue
Niue is a small island nation in the South Pacific. Although it is completely self-governing and independent, it remains in free association with New Zealand, a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations, hence the portrait of the British monarch on most of its coinage. The country is located about 1,450 miles northeast of New Zealand. It is closest to Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. It is one of the largest coral islands in the world, with a total area of 260 square kilometers. Niueans are predominantly Polynesian; most are bilingual, speaking both Niuean and English.
