The calm country of Mr. Porter's new collection of poems is not England or Australia, the two social democracies he has lived in, but the human body itself - a region tamed by reason but visited by calamities as well as halcyon days. These new poems, all written in the years of 1972 to 1974, are more formal in construction, as well as more elegiac in spirit than his previous work.
