MORE THAN 35 YEARS AT THE SERVICE OF THE EXQUISITE COLLECTOR, FOR WHOM I THANK.
This is an extraordinary medal by perhaps the greatest Art Deco artist in existence. The medal commemorates the International Exhibition of Arts and Technology held in Paris in 1937. The obverse depicts a worker and a visual artist over a relief of Marianne looking to the left. The reverse features two flaming torches next to a hammer, olive trees, and two entwined serpents, the columns having winged ends.
Pierre Louis Aristide Turin, known as Pierre Turin, was a French engraver and medalist. He was born in Sucy-en-Brie on August 3, 1891, and died on July 25, 1968.
Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie on August 3, 1891.
He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied with Frédéric-Charles de Vernon (French), Henri-Auguste Patey, and Jules Coutan. Beginning in 1911, his works were exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Françaises. In 1920, he received the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, and in 1925, the gold medal. In 1929, for the Monnaie de Paris, he created a new type of coin featuring Marianne wearing the Phrygian cap surrounded by an olive wreath on the obverse and an ear of wheat on the reverse, the so-called Turin type. This engraving was used on the ten-franc coins until 1949 and the twenty-franc coins until 1939.
