Large Antique German Etched Beer Stein by M.Girmscheid - Fox Hunt c. 1900

Description: Fantastic large antique German beer stein made in the "etched" technique that is usually associated with Mettlach. However, it was made by Matthias Girmscheid, one of the major beer stein manufacturers in early 1900s Germany. He established his own company in 1870 in Hoehr (now Hoehr-Grenzhausen), the famous Westerwald beer stein-making area.

The stein is made of pottery using an etched technique with hand-painted coloring. The design is quite interesting. The panoramic design shows a tavern scene with a hunter who came back from his hunt with a fox trophy, telling his story to the tavern customers. This is a copy of a popular painting of the time. The inscription reads:

"Ohne Mädchen, Bier und Wein, kann man nicht gut lustig sein."
(Without girls, beer, and wine, you can't have a good time.)

The lid is pewter with a ceramic inlay showing a minnesinger of old times playing lute.

This is a large stein measuring 12" tall with a capacity of 1.5 L.

The stein is not marked with the manufacturer's mark, but the "Beer Stein Library" attributes it to Girmschied. The design is marked "GK" - the mark of an artist who worked for Girmsheid. His name is not known.

The stein is in excellent flawless condition with only minimal paint wear.
