The size R band boasts a fine jewellery department quality and retains its original charm despite its age. A fine example of original Art Deco design, this ring is a timeless treasure that encapsulates the sophistication of the era.
1. Markings:
The band reads: "10K GOLD FILLED & STERLING" followed by "U.G." (possibly a maker's mark) and a faint stamp or symbol.
This mixed-metal marking was commonly used in American jewelry from the 1910s to 1930s.
"U.G." might refer to Uncas Manufacturing Co., a prolific American jewelry maker from Rhode Island, established in 1911. They used similar mixed-metal settings and paste stones.
2. Design Notes:
The flat, wide, yet low-profile face, combined with the vertical orientation and symmetrical layout, are hallmarks of late 1920s into the 1930s Art Deco design.
While Edwardian rings were more filigree and lacy, this ring has a more geometric and bolder look, moving away from that delicacy.
3. Closed-Back Paste Stones:
Closed-back settings continued into the Deco period, especially in costume and gold-filled jewelry meant to mimic high-end platinum and diamond rings.
The paste stones look hand-cut (or molded) with some slight variance in shape and wear, typical of older paste.
