A Unique and Truly a One-of-a-Kind Find!!

Single box of Marshmallow Pumpkins from the Knorpp Candy Company of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, which ceased operations in the 1960s.

Discovered in a child's doll trunk in an 1850s New England farmhouse. Known family history suggest these confections date from the very early 1900s (before 1919).

Still in the original box, carefully wrapped in waxed paper, these early jack-o'-lanterns smile genially from their comfy repose. Icing smiles and eyes are intact, and orange sugared coating is as sparkly as when they were first rolled in the sweet stuff. Hard as rocks, these little fellows do not appear to have lost much of their original size over time. Each one is a little under 2" in diameter.

"Knorpp's Wholesome Candies" the label reads. However, in 1912, Knorpp was sued by the US Attorney for New York for shipping tainted candy (laced with talc) over state lines to Massachusetts, in 1911. Knorpp eventually pled guilty, and paid a fine--of $250!! Whether these were among those tainted goods, and thus never eaten, is unknown.

None were taste tested to check their wholesomeness.

Knorpp was the holder of several patents, including paper lanterns with Halloween themes. They also applied for a patent for marshmallow candies, which may explain the Serial no. 17302 on the side of the box.

A true piece of history, nestled in a cardboard box!

This is a Third Party Sale. Proceeds go toward renovation work on the farmhouse.
