The Dunhill brand was born in 1893's when young Alfred Dunhill began to suspect that horse-drawn transport would soon be replaced by automobiles, and wisely decided to transform his father’s saddlery into a supplier of motorist’s accessories.

Although currently the company appears to be taking a hiatus from pen-making, writing instruments have been a key component of the product line for much of the brand’s history. At the apex of this were the hand-lacquered maki-e fountain pens made for Dunhill by Japan’s Namiki company, an alliance first forged in the late 1920's.
