THE FIRST UNIT TO FLY JET FIGHTERS INTO BATTLE

THIS IS A BOOK FOR THE MILITARY AVIATION ENTHUSIAST - a thoroughly detailed and unvarnished account of the world's first ever jet fighter plane outfit.  Formed in August 1944 when the war had already turned against the Axis powers, Germany's Jagdeschwader 7 (or JG 7) was equipped with the revolutionary Me 262 jet fighter.  The new twin-engined jet had its teething issues but it outperformed Allied piston-engined fighters.  Its arrival was a nasty surprise for Germany's enemies.
  • Author Manfred Boehme tells JG 7's story - including details of the ME 262's  brilliant design, the highly skilled pilots who were chosen to fly it and the controversy over how it should be used.  It was designed as a high-speed interceptor to shoot down American and British bombers and their fighter escorts but Hitler and the Luftwaffe boss Goering insisted it be used as a bomber - where it was less effective.

THIS COPY IS IN PRISTINE CONDITION with clean, fresh and crisp pages, a firm and square hardcover binding and an intact dust-jacket that we have protected with a plastic cover to keep it in fine shape. It is illustrated with black-and-white photographs and, in addition to a general index, it provides copious notes on JG 7.  There are no signs of previous ownership.
