Beautifully Detailed Vintage Handmade
Silver Spoon Bangle / Bracelet
This lovely bangle offers the opportunity to expand the historical story of spoon rings to co-ordinating jewellery. It has been hand crafted from a beautifully simple antique sterling silver pair of sugar tongs. The bracelet has a diameter of approx. 6.5cm but can be adjusted slightly to suit your requirements so please do let me know if you need a different size. The tongs are hammer finished to create facets which catch the light beautifully. The sugar tongs are fully hallmarked (Makers mark James Dixon and Sons, Lion Passant, assayed in Sheffield in 1903)
This bangle has been legally approved and certified by the assay office in accordance with the 1973 Hallmarking Act, the unique 5 digit certification number is engraved on the inside.
Jewellery made from any UK hallmarked piece of cutlery by law must be submitted to one of the UK assay offices for either a change of use certificate where original hallmarks are displayed or for new hallmarking where they are too worn or hidden. All our spoon rings, sugar tong and fork bangles are legally approved for sale by the assay office.
Spoon rings were first made in 17th century England as wedding rings by servants who could not afford expensive precious metals. Servants would steal a silver spoon from their master and have it turned into a wedding ring to be worn on the thumb of their love. Servants who were caught were sentenced for "stealing a silver spoon". An expression of love would be punished with a sentence of 7 years imprisonment overseas. When they arrived some of the servants are recorded as having met skillful prisoners who could create these beautiful rings and they would take yet another spoon from an officer or their new master to present their love with a precious token.
Ever since these times, spoon rings have been a timeless and unique gift of love,
a wonderful piece of heritage not forgotten
It will come packaged with a hand made unbleached cotton bag featuring a hand painted little bird
