Description

Offered is a very scarce (now empty) antique DuPont Superfine gunpowder tin in the rare dark green color. Our research indicates that this tin dates to between 1860-1880. This tin is in exceptional condition considering it age. The paper chromolithograph label graphics are excellent and show a hound, stag, buffalo and a Native American on horseback. It was produced by the E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Company of Wilmington, DE. It maintains its original brass mushroomed cap.

This tin is similar to an example printed on p. 71 of "Gun Powder Cans & Kegs: The Bacyk Collection" by Bacyk, Bacyk & Rowe (1998). It is rated "Rarity 3"--"uncommon."

Research: “E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours and his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. The company began with the production of gunpowder. The du Pont’s purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine River just North of Wilmington, Delaware. During wartime the company was a major supplier for the United States government. During peacetime, the company marketed their product towards sportsmen and hunters. Throughout the 1900s and 1910s, the company shifted its focus away from gunpowder production and towards chemistry innovations. By 1926 the company officially dissolved the powder production unit, although it had already been inactive for many years.”

Dimension/size – this is the one pound three ounces size tin. It stands about 5 ¾” high, is almost 4” wide and almost 1 ½” thick. It weighs about 2.3 ounces (empty). (Believe it or not it was still full of powder when discovered!)

Condition – this tin is in exceptional condition considering its age. Some minor wear. A small spot of what appears to be white paint is on the top of the can. It would more than likely “chip” off but we did not attempt to do that. There is some minor pitting/rust on the bottom of the can. Slight paper label loss in the upper right-hand corner. Please see photos.

About Us

The Amazing Grace on eBay store was opened to assist us in selling the rather extensive estate of a friend's mother that we have "inherited". Sally collected a variety of things for many years and 95% of the over 1,200 treasures have been in storage for the last 20 years or more. From depression glass to Asian porcelain and carvings to Native American turquiose & silver jewelry, Sally was a very accomplished collector and even had numerous reference books that accompanied her collections. We have since expanded to also sell other "inherited" collections as well as estate and garage sale finds.

We fully understand that in order to sell this vast estate we must offer excellent customer service and fair prices in order to earn repeat customers. Our goal is to make sure each and every customer has a positive buying experience and is completely satisfied. While not experts by any means, we will do our best to fully and accurately describe our offerings. We expend a great deal of effort in researching each piece to insure an accurate description and your satisfaction is our highest priority.
