Beautiful, original, deep, rolling, copper luster.NGC certification number 4816670-006.
Minted in the San Francisco Mint.
This is a rare S mint mark over D, not notated on the holder.
I tried to show pictures showing the remnants of the retooling/re-punching done to the dies
within the top and bottom loops of the digit 8. Look at different pictures to see all areas where there is
a line remnant across both loops. It is very clear under a loupe at the right angle.
When the mint converts a D mintmark to an S, the D is much smaller and the engraver designates
the top and middle section of the S as the overlay on top of the entire D.
He cuts a drop deeper then the original D to make the superimposed S much bolder and stand out.
He attempts to curve the loops around and make ball serifs basically touching the corresponding hump
of the S so that he almost totally obliterates the original D. However there are tell tale signs.
Which are; part of the bottom serif of the original D diagonally sticks out to bridge the gap between the
bottom left parts of the S, and there will be a curved line (Inner part of left side of D) which will be evident
going across from the S hump far left going slightly diagonally to the inside roof of the S's top.
These error signs are all very evident on this beautiful coin.
This variety should be much rarer then the 1944D Over S, or 1946S over D as the mintage
numbers for the San Francisco mint in 1948 overall was much much lower, by over 100,000,000!
And there are a much less number of errors.
