Hayes' victory at the 1998 Buick Classic. Beem's breakthrough came in 1999 with his win at the Kemper Open as a rookie. He advanced his career significantly in 2002 with a win at The International in Castle Rock, Colorado.
Beem's momentum continued as he clinched the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine National, one of the four major golf tournaments. He opened with a par 72, but a six-under 66 in the second round tied him for first place. A third-round 72 placed him in second, three strokes behind Justin Leonard. In the final round, Beem held off Tiger Woods, who finished just one stroke behind after Beem carded a 68 to Woods' 67. This triumph secured Beem's spot in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking.
