RESEARCH NOTES:
High-tech from the start
The “Oberlausitzer Glaswerke J. Schweig and Co.”, founded in Weißwasser in 1889, was a high-tech company from the start. The glassworks initially manufactured hollow glasses for medicine as well as glass tubes and bulbs for light bulbs. Table glasses followed later. The developers at Stölzle Lausitz set important milestones on the long path to the modern wine goblet. This doesn't just apply to the shape of the drinking glasses, decanters, carafes, jugs and vases. Glass for the table must also be functional: hard-wearing, emphasizing the aromas and being light and balanced in the hand.
Confusion, turning point, return
During GDR times, the glassworks in Weißwasser was the largest producer of goblet glass in the country. 4000 people were employed here. Then the German reunification shook the industrial landscape in eastern Germany like an earthquake: many companies crumbled to dust. Speculators bought companies just to make quick money. The glassworks in Weißwasser also found itself caught up in this vortex. Many employees lost their jobs and there was a threat of economic collapse.
In 1996 the tide turned for the better when Stölzle Oberglas AG took over the factory. The Austrian family business gave it a leaner, more efficient and more sustainable structure and a new name: Stölzle Lausitz GmbH. The parent company modernized the halls and the three production lines in Weißwasser. After the restructuring, she made her subsidiary independent again. With success. Stölzle Lausitz returned to the forefront of the German goblet glass industry as an autonomous manufacturer.
Modern from the furnace to the mold
Since then, Weißwasser has been producing fine glasses using the most modern methods, which are exemplary for the entire industry. The two glass tanks now allowed the mechanical production of lead-free crystal glasses. Wine goblets produced here can hardly be distinguished from hand-blown quality. In this way, Stölzle also serves the wishes of demanding customers.
Elegant glasses are part of the lifestyle. What is in vogue today may be old hat tomorrow. The management is therefore leading the glassworks on a sustainable course. She is constantly developing her products on her own initiative. Stölzle also produces individual designs for customers or prints, varnishes and engraves glasses.
Taste design for the palate and the eye
“Form follows function.” This motto has shaped the Bauhaus style. Wilhelm Wagenfeld, a student at the Dessau Design School, brought this idea to Weißwasser in 1930. In addition, the pioneer of industrial design at Stölzle had a decisive influence on the understanding of quality. Both live on today in the functional design of Stölzle glasses. It combines aesthetics and enjoyment.
The taste design from Stölzle Lausitz emphasizes the individual character of each drink: wines, sparkling wines, spirits, cocktails... Because the full aroma only develops in the right glass. Finding the right shape and size requires experience and perseverance. Stölzle has proven both in its 130 years of existence.
