The painting depicts a view of the coastal landscape of the Amalfi Coast near Conca dei Marini towards Amalfi with high cliffs, several coastal houses, and fishing boats in the foreground. Some figures appear in a coastal cove. In the distance we can also see the Monastery of Santa Rosa standing on the rock. This is the landscape of the Amalfi Coast at first light in the springtime, with nature lush and blooming. Compared to most of Eugenio Magno's paintings, which are small in size, this one with its 50x70 measurements represents a rarity in his production.
Eugenio Magno is one of the greatest contemporary interpreters of the Neapolitan painting tradition: born in Naples in 1944, a pupil of Francesco Galante. Galante himself, as well as Giacinto Gigante, Eduardo Dalbono, and Giuseppe Casciaro can be considered as Eugenio Magno's real putative masters, his source of inspiration and staples of his artistic training. Magno established himself as an exclusive landscape painter, held more than two hundred exhibitions in various Italian and foreign cities. Present in domestic and foreign auction catalogs, he has won prestigious awards and honors, such as the Marcus Aurelius Prize, the "Ducatone d'Argento" and the coveted "Ambrogino d'Oro." He is considered the worthy heir of the illustrious Neapolitan school of landscape painting, of which he represents a valid and up-to-date study. To his great technical mastery, Master Magno adds his very personal interpretation of reality, managing to be at once classical and modern. He thus creates breathtaking perspectives and depths with magical colors and minute details, obtained through thousands of skillful brushstrokes capable of arousing a sense of invaluable peace and serenity.
His "seascapes" and landscapes so finely executed that they have gradually won over the public and national and international critics, even one of his paintings ("Crepuscolo Partenopeo") inspired the famous song "O Castiello mmiez' o mare" by maestro Roberto Murolo as he himself declared in 1972.
Eugenio Magno's art stems from the observation of nature and ends in the artist's imagination, which re-proposes a semblance, almost a reflection of what he has observed, going on to create a dreamy atmosphere, as in this coastal view observed near Conca dei Marini on the Amalfi Coast. The brushstrokes evoke the touch of the masters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose soul hovers and flourishes in Eugenio Magno's paintings. His landscape scenes have an emotional vein, easily perceptible. It is a sentimental, almost spiritual filter that connects the painter with nature, establishing an engaging and passionate relationship with it.
In Eugene Magnus' refined and elegant landscapes, the climatic element becomes the focus of the subject. Indeed, we observe how in this coastal landscape the ripples of the sky, the rosy coloration that the sky takes on at first light in the morning, the reflections and contrasts of light create the most striking effects of the visual narrative. The wide atmospheric spaces circulate the warm salty air peculiar to Neapolitan landscape works of the late 19th century. The same sentiment runs through Eugenio's canvases, which are, however, enriched with an ethereal and dreamy feel. Where a timeless suspension is felt.
Coloristic impression is the focal point of the painter's artistic expression, whose paintings are made in the studio following the memory of the landscape vision. A perfect interweaving of fantasy and reality is thus created. And nature palpitates, quivers, screams in the same way as it reflects, observes, falls silent among poetic plots directed to an instinctive and incessant sentimentality. Man, barely hinted at in the canvases, experiences creation almost unconsciously. But the public viewer of the work lives and reflects the nature depicted, with awareness and readiness of mind, breathing deeply the salty air that dominates the wide spaces depicted.
Eugenio's expressive ability is juxtaposed with poetic moods, capable of vigorously bringing to life a dreamy yet realistic atmosphere. The center of his works often coincides with the encounter between the sea and the sky, emphasizing the meeting of two different but not incompatible modes of existential perception.
The brushstroke is fast and imprecise, almost impressionistic. Earthy and natural colors are spread in small patches, now veiled, now full-bodied and textural, embroidering whole emotional worlds enclosed in small canvases. Figures and forms are shaped by color spread purely, without yielding to any nuance. The purity of color that fills Eugenio's paintings is refined into an artistic composition of elegant workmanship and equally refined emotional materiality, in a harmonious waltz between reality and fantasy.
