ABOUT THIS SENSOR
The oxygen sensor (O2 sensor / lambda sensor) is mounted in the exhaust system and measures the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. The ECM uses this signal to calculate the air-fuel ratio and make real-time fuel trim corrections - keeping the engine running at the correct stoichiometric ratio for fuel efficiency and emissions compliance. Most V6 engines use multiple sensors: upstream (pre-cat) sensors control the fuel trim loop, while downstream (post-cat) sensors monitor catalytic converter efficiency.
On the Holden LFX and LFW V6 engines the O2 sensors are a known wear item from around 150,000km onwards. Failure typically causes the ECM to run in open-loop mode, resulting in rich or lean fuel trim, poor economy, rough idle, and catalyst damage if left unchecked.
