Although I certainly admire George Eliot's writing, the true appeal of this book for me is the delicate and detailed art of Hugh Thomson. There are numerous color plates as well as black and white drawings. His art deeply enhances the story. It does have some condition issues, but overall is still quite a marvelous book!
This book was bought used, but is in good condition. I take good care of my books in my smoke-free environment.
Notes on condition:
dust jacket: lacking the scarce dustwrapper
binding: green cloth boards with gold stamped decoration and lettering on front board and decoration/lettering on spine; faintly soiled; moderate rubbing at corners and top and bottom of spine, with chipping top of spine and partial surface separation along both sides of spine
interior pages: clean, no tears, moderate discoloration from aging; former owner's name and date in ink top of initial title page, and owner's name in ink following page; all pages secure, with 1 1/4-in or less separation between pages top of gutter at three locations, plus back free end papers
All color plates intact with four plates separated from binding; frontispiece with tissue guard
