This vintage Siamese pillbox is crafted of 17.48g of Sterling Silver (tested 925). The top features a 3-dimensional relief of Mani Mekhala, the Goddess of the Seas and Lightening. The story of her eternal battle with the Demon Reamesor is a sacred part of the Siamese Thai culture and told in dance at the beginning of the Monsoon season. The legend is that their annual battle causes the thunder and lightening and brings the rains of the season.
I believe this pill box was made between 1930 and 1950 based upon the general age of other items sourced at the same Estate sale. Online research of similar items concurs with this timeframe.
It was originally stamped with a mark on the inside but I cannot read it.
Diameter: 1 1/2"
Length including hinge: 1 5/8"
Height: 1" to top of relief, 5/8" to top rim.
(The top is slightly domed)
The box is in very good condition for it's age. It is missing the hinge pin. This can be easily replaced with a non sterling rod sourced at a local craft store if the purchaser desires. The box does have some tarnish and wear consistent with age and use. See photos for condition details.
