ABOUT THIS SENSOR
The 1VD-FTV uses coolant temperature as an input to glow plug timing, viscous fan control and diesel particulate filter regeneration. A sensor reading low holds the engine in a warm-up strategy, which delays regeneration and loads the filter faster than it should.
Because the 70 Series spends its life towing and idling in heat, this sensor sees more thermal cycling than most. The drift is gradual, so the thermostat is usually blamed and replaced before the sensor is ever checked.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF FAILURE
- Fault codes P0115, P0116, P0117 or P0118 stored
- Viscous fan not engaging under load or when towing
- Temperature gauge slow to rise or sitting cold when warm
- Hard cold starting with white smoke and extended glow time
- More frequent DPF regeneration or a regeneration warning
- Poor fuel economy with no other fault found
