THE ORIGINAL PAINTING BY DOMENICO INDUNO DATES FROM 1854 AND IS PRESERVED AT THE BRERA ART GALLERY IN MILAN.
THE WORK DEPICTS A POPULAR DOMESTIC INTERIOR WITH A FIREPLACE AND SOME KITCHEN SUPPLIES, AT THE CENTER OF THE SCENE THE FIGURE OF AN OLD SEATED HUNTER CONVERSING WITH A CHILD, ALSO SEATED, SEEN IN PROFILE, WHO LISTENS TO HIM PASSIONATELY. IT PRESENTS A RIGOROUS COMPOSITIONAL LAYOUT THAT ALLOWS THE ARTIST TO FOCUS DOWN TO THE DETAILS OF THE POOR OBJECTS THAT CROWD THE SCENE WITH APPARENT CASUALNESS, WITH A FREE AND LOOSE BRUSHSTROKE THAT WILL CHARACTERIZE HIS LAST PERIOD OF ACTIVITY, IN WHICH THE PAINTER'S FAVORITE THEMES BECOME THE INTERIORS OF THE PETTY BOURGEOISIE OR THE POORER CLASSES, MISERY NARRATED IN ITS EVERYDAY DIGNITY, AND CHRONICLE EPISODES. IN INDUNO'S GENRE PAINTING, JUXTAPOSABLE FOR THAT MATTER TO THE BEST FLEMISH TRADITION IN TERMS OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESCRIPTIVISM AND POETIC LUMINISTIC AFFLATUS, ELEMENTS OF GREAT ARTISTIC DEPTH CAN BE DISCERNED.

Domenico Induno (Milan, 1815 - 1878) was an Italian painter active in the 19th century. As a young man he worked as an apprentice to goldsmith Luigi Cossa, who convinced him to enroll at the Brera Academy, finding him particularly gifted in the art of drawing.
From 1831 he followed courses at Brera, first under Pompeo Marchesi, then Luigi Sabatelli, and finally Francesco Hayez; in his early works, which were officially awarded several times, the influence of Hayez's painting is fully felt. In his paintings, with subjects taken from episodes of the Bible, or from ancient history, he included patriotic elements, as in the canvas "Brutus vows to avenge the death of Lucretia" and in other canvases with subjects charged with feeling, such as "Massacre of the Innocents."
In 1840 Domenico Induno exhibited "Saul anointed king by the prophet Samuel," a canvas commissioned from him by the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I for the imperial gallery in Vienna.
In 1854 Domenico obtained the appointment as "Socio d'Arte" of the Brera Academy, and in the same year he exhibited, along with other paintings, "Bread and Tears," purchased by Hayez and presented the following year in Paris, where it was particularly appreciated.
The apex of his career he reached with the canvas "Al cader delle foglie," exhibited in 1859, along with other domestic subjects, where he presents female figures intent on daily chores. From 1860 he began work on the "Bulletin of Villafranca," a work he executed in several versionsː one of which, commissioned by King Victor Emmanuel II, earned him the title of Knight of Saints Maurice and Lazarus.

His works, oriented for the most part toward so-called "folk art," are treated with exquisite ideality, meticulously but with freshness and vivacity, and a frank, vigorous and intimate feeling of the life of his time shines through them. His works are preserved in museums, public collections and important private collections.

Domenico Induno, an ardent patriot, often drew on contemporary Italian history and the events of the wars of independence for the realization of his works, however, declining them in a prosaic, everyday chronicle key. A masterful example of this is the painting representing" The Arrival of the Bulletin of the Peace of Villafranca" (oil on canvas, 1862, Rome, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna), in which the painter wanted to bear witness, rather than the official act, to the impression made on the people by the arrival of the news that Napoleon III had imposed the armistice on the Austrians, a work gravitating between genre and history painting imbued with a naturalistic light. 
To a more mature phase of the painter's activity belong works devoted to a more intimate everyday life, to marginalized popular figures and to the work of the female world, probably stimulated by the Austrian Biedermeier painters active in Milan, as in the case of the painting "School of Dressmakers" (oil on canvas, c. 1865, Milan, Galleria d'Arte Moderna), characterized by the typical scornful brushstroke that became a trademark of the latter period.
