The award-wining Isle of Harris Gin is distilled in Tarbert in a small copper gin still, known as ‘The Dottach’. Named after a similarly small and feisty local woman who is fondly remembered in Harris. The gin uses nine botanicals including Sugar Kelp seaweed which creates subtle coastal notes in the spirit. Sugar kelp is harvested by a local diver from the seas around the Outer Hebrides.
The gin is presented in a beautiful glass bottle, ribbed and rippled like the sea. The paper label holds flecks of Sugar Kelp and copper, each one different with over 20 unique iterations. The bottom of the bottle hides a Latin motto to live by, Esse Quam Videri. This is the founder Burr’s family motto, in recognition of all his efforts in creating the distillery. It means “To Be, Rather Than Seem To Be”, a reminder to remain authentic.
The gin itself is smooth and complex, perfect to enjoy on its own or with tonic and a slice of red grapefruit. It also makes the perfect martini when stirred down with vermouth and garnished with a red grapefruit peel.
