PAIR 12” KING CHARLES CAVELIER SPANIELS STAFFORDSHIRE VICTORIAN STYLE REPRODUCTION 20th Century.

This listing is for a beautifully hand painted 12” pair of English Staffordshire porcelain dog figurines of rusty-orange and white seated spaniel dogs with pale gold medallion and collars. Their features are superb with excellent eyes and noses. Their two front legs conjoined and not separate. This pair of Staffordshire dogs in the late Victorian style probably shows a deep definition, the brush work is of wonderful quality. The varnish covers the outside of the dogs well without being patchy.

Queen Victoria''s first dog, Dash, was very likely the source of inspiration for the Spaniel figures in the 19th century. Staffordshire figures were typically placed on a mantelpiece or flat back, meaning that less attention was placed on their back. However, this particular pair shows INCREDIBLE QUALITY OF DETAILS on all sides, right down to their claws being individually painted. They are in great undamaged condition. The backs show curly hair but are not painted.

(Anyone who has been watching “The Great Pottery Throw down” will appreciate how difficult it is to cast and fire figurines of this size and weight…let alone hand paint to such a highly detailed spec. And then glaze!!!).

Weight: each weigh approx 2.5kg

Condition: EXCELLENT with NO chips, very slight light crazing on very close inspection. There are a couple of cracks around the base of one dog where the legs are moulded, but do not show unless closely inspected….probably happened during firing…..commensurate with age. Please see all photos.
