Absolutely gorgeous and remarkable pair of vintage 1960s Tutti Frutti colored gemstones earrings by the Greek Royal Family's Court jeweler Vourakis who worked for Van Cleef and Arpels during that same period of time (1950s-1960s). Mounted in 18K yellow gold.
The magnificent and large pair of half moon ear clips are designed in a bursting ray like fashion with a large round natural South Sea pearl at center surrounded by a partial cluster of round and marquise cut rubies, sapphires and spinels and is indeed emblematic for similar designs and pieces that Vourakis crafted for Van Cleef & Arpels during the 1950s and 1960s. Both ear studs comprise a total of 32 pink, blue and yellow sapphires, as well as fine red natural rubies and spinels of various sizes and cuts. Total estimated combined weight of all gemstones is in the 8.5 carat range. The two large South Sea cultured pearls exhibit superb white color and lustre without any blemishes and being perfectly round with a diameter of 13mm each. All gems are open set throughout the entire jewel. The earrings measure about 29x27mm (about 1.14"x1.02") and gross weight is 28.2 grams in 18 karat yellow gold. Each clasp is signed VOURAKIS, as well as hallmarked 750 for 18K gold. Each earring equipped with a gold post and ornate clover shaped clasp for extra security.
The craftsmanship and quality of the Vourakis jewels is unsurpassed and comparable only to the top jewelry firms like Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., Bulgari, etc. and it is not surprising that Vourakis worked for Van Cleef & Arpels during this same 1950 to 1960 period. The exceptional Vourakis pieces and particularly the vintage ones are often featured at major world auction sales. Absolutely scarce vintage jewelry collector's set and one of the rare and important Vourakis gem set earrings and jewels.
